Experience Australia's
unique wildlife during your stay at Fauna Australia Wildlife Retreat.
Meet the Aussie favorites like Koalas, Wombats, Kangaroos
and Wallabies.
Talk to the parrots and cockatoos. A few tasty nuts will always make some friends. Animal feed is provided for the Kangaroos, Wallabies and Wombats, but you can also bring some extra treats if you wish. When the sun goes down, the place comes alive with the lesser known nocturnal animals, like Squirrel and Sugar Gliders, Rufous and Brush-tailed Bettongs, Northern and Southern Brown Bandicoots, Long-nosed Potoroos, Flying Foxes, Curlews, Owls, Eastern Quolls and the ferocious TIGER QUOLL (rarely seen in the Otways). All animals are held in enclosures for their safety and yours (the birds would fly away). Several are free range in our compound, some you can go in and feed and you can meet the Koalas with supervision. We are continually trying to find ways to remove the barriers. Due to :the aggressive nature of many of the animals that we house, their territorial behaviour, our interest in breeding them, and by Law we cannot have them escape, they do need to be housed in enclosures. If you do not like animals in captivity, then we are not the place for you. The wildlife held at Fauna Australia Wildlife Retreat are from our own private collection. We do not receive any Government funding or support. Government regulations prohibit the displaying of orphaned or injured wildlife obtained through the Wildlife Shelter system. Currently we do not take in, injured/ orphaned wildlife due to the possibilities of introducing diseases or viruses to our stock. At present there are many dedicated individuals currently undertaking these activities. All our animals come from legal sources, from other zoos/ wildlife parks and individuals interested in the conservation of Australian Wildlife. Sadly many of the species that we house at Fauna Australia Wildlife Retreat are slowly disappearing due to predation from feral cats and foxes, land clearing and environmental changes. Some species housed, will never be seen in the true wild again in Victoria. Working with other individuals around Australia our aim is to increase numbers in captivity to produce viable populations that someday may be able to be released in controlled environments (Pseudowild). |
